50 Percent of Australians Want to Lose Weight

Only half of all Australians aged 14 and over (52 percent) don't want to change their weight, while 44 percent said they would like to lose weight and 4 percent said they would like to gain weight, the Bulletin-Morgan Poll finds.

  • Women were much more likely than men to want to lose weight (53 percent compared to 35 percent of men) while those aged 35 to 49 were most likely to want to lose (51 percent), followed by those aged 50 and over (45 percent) and those aged 25 to 34 (42 percent). Young Australians aged 14 to 24 were least likely to want to lose weight (36 percent).
  • Asked how much they would like to lose, the most popular choice was between three and six kilograms (16 percent of Australians) followed by up to three kilograms (11 percent). Nearly one-in-ten Australians would like to lose between six and ten kilograms (9 percent) and nearly the same number want to lose over 10 kilograms (8 percent).
  • Women were nearly twice as likely to chose the three to six kilogram range (20 percent of women cf to 12 percent of men) and the 10 kilograms and over range (11 percent of women cf. 5 percent of men).
  • Young Australians aged 14 to 24 were most likely to choose the three to 10 kilograms ranges of weight loss (28 percent), while for older Australians the choices were spread across all weight ranges, though the three to six kilogram range remained the most popular choice.
  • Nearly one-in-three Australians (31 percent) has tried to lose weight in the last 12 months. Again, women were more likely than men to have tried to lose weight (39 percent of women compared to 24 percent of men) while those in the 25 to 34 year old age group were most likely to have tried (38 percent), followed by 35 to 49 year olds (31 percent) and those aged 50 and over (30 percent). Australians aged 14 to 24 were least likely to have tried to lose weight (29 percent).
  • The more weight respondents wanted to lose, the more likely they were to have tried to lose weight in the last 12 months with nearly three-quarters of those wanting to lose more than 10 kilograms (72 percent) trying to lose weight. Overall, 55 percent of those who wanted to lose weight attempted weight reduction.
  • Asked about methods of weight reduction in the last 12 months, Australians were most likely to have chosen the standard methods of altering food intake (22 percent) or increasing exercise (21 percent). Less than 1 percent of Australians chose the more unusual treatments of hypnosis or aromatherapy or the use of drugs or pills. Those who did try them were more likely to be women and over 35 years of age.
