Is restricting sodium the best way to lower blood pressure?

Most doctors will tell their patients who suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure), to reduce sodium. But, the Journal of the American Medical Association recently concluded that restricting sodium intake has a limited effect on on people with high blood pressure under the age of 45 and a insignificant effect on people with normal blood pressure.

Results from another trial in the US found that people who had a moderate sodium intake but increased their intake of potassium, calcium and magnesium by eating plenty of fruit, vegetables and low-fat dairy products, showed more significant reductions in blood pressure that those who simply restricted sodium.

Reducing salt intake from current levels can't hurt and we could all benefit from eating more fresh foods.
